ABSTRACT
During
2002, the project REN-20010466/GLO made it possible tohire a
person for six months who, among other activities, confirmed the
actual existence ofthe amphibians appearing as originating in
Castilla-La Mancha (España) in old record books, collection cards
and the updated databases of the MNCN, which were created in the
mid 80s ofthe last century, when Prof. Emiliano Aguirre was
director of the Museum and the big challenge of recuperating the
collections of the MNCN was taken up. As
a consequence, the existence of about 1.724 amphibians originating
in the above-indicated area and included in 518 computer records,
has been confirmed. Some of them, more than a century old, were
the first specimens collected, in the last three decades ofthe
19th century, by the founding father
of Spanish
herpetology (Mr. Eduardo Boscá y Casanoves). AIso important is
the presence of the holotype of Alytes obstetricasn pertinax -García-
París y Martínez-Solano, 2000- among the specimens kept from
Castilla-La Mancha. These
specimens, and their data, are kept at the MNCN as witnesses to
the biodiversity of the past and as part of our cornmon national
heritage, and specifically of our natural heritage, for future
generations and to be used by the scientific cornmunity in their
research work.
